Tom Akins, LCSW, PMHNP, has decades of experience in the mental health field and 22 years’ experience prescribing for ages 11 to 65 in various clinical and research settings. He has an undergraduate degree in philosophy and research statistics from the University of Oregon, a Master’s Degree in Social Work from Portland State University, and a Master’s Degree in Nursing from Oregon Health and Science University. In the State of Oregon, he is a Licensed Clinical Social Worker and a Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner. He was an Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) for many years. Tom worked at White Bird Clinic in the Crisis and counseling programs and was part of the group that developed the CAHOOTS Program. Tom worked at Lane County Behavioral Health (LCBH) from 1996 until 2004 as a LCSW and from 2004 until 2014 as a PMHNP, and at White Bird Medical Clinic from 2006 t0 2015 as a PMHNP. Tom has specialized training in crisis intervention, CBT, DBT and various other therapy modalities. He has extensive experience prescribing for major mental health problems including First Episode Psychosis, Critical High-Risk clients, major depression, anxiety, insomnia, bipolar, ADHD, Autism and metabolic issues. Tom has been part of a research group doing clinical trials since 2010. Tom focuses on treating individuals, their families, and their circumstances including their physical, social and mental health needs.
